Seems logical too me. Are we really offending people if we put it as the official language? Geezz.

Because we apparently have a bunch of wuss politicians that don't have the gonads to stand up for anything. I do know they are pushing hard for this in the House.

Other countries are willing to keep thier identity where as the US is full of people who want to be in the world community rather than in our great country. They want us to give up our values and traditions and official language (whether it is official or not, it the language that I heard all the years that I have been alive way before these foreign invaders.) THe majority of people living in the US, sadly, will not be happy until our country is a third world country most of the rest of the world.

Because English is so widely spoken, it has often been referred to as a "world language", the lingua franca of the modern era, While English is not an official language in most countries, it is currently the language most often taught as a second language around the world. Some linguists (such as David Graddol) believe that it is no longer the exclusive cultural property of "native English speakers", but is rather a language that is absorbing aspects of cultures worldwide as it continues to grow.

Good question - I've been wondering this for years myself. When I lived in California, the DMV in the Los Angeles area printed driver's manuals in well over one hundred different languages. What a waste of money! If you can't read english, how can you read the street signs?

If I moved to Frace, Mexico or any other foreign country, I would WANT to learn the language. To do otherwise is disrespectful of the country you chose to live in.

no you see, since the beginning we here at the U.S. have been excepting everyone from around the world. So much that the amount of other languages spoken here and the amount of people that speak those languages are about equivalant to english speakers.

The US English is a simplified spelling, phonetic language at best. The fact that too many Americans can't write in their own form properly means you end up with something that may look to a foreign person (whose uses the cyrrillic alphabet, or Hiragana/Katakana/Kanji) like English, but is in fact gibberish.
So yes, you offend every English speaking person in the world by describing American as such.

You Americans don't know much about your own political decisions, do you? The US Senate declared English as the official language of America on 19th May 2006. Wake up - it was in all your newspapers!
