It was a seeming successful and pleasant interivew to the point that the HR Director made a positive comment by saying that I did my homework and even provided me with her direct line at Ernst and Young. We even discussed compensation and the possibility of helping me in the recruitment process. One week passed still no phone call. Thanks for all of your advice.

Did she say when she would contact you again? Did you send a "thank you" email for the telephone interview? You should have. If you didn't, you still can. On to your question -- the trick is to show your interest and enthusiasm without seeming like a pest. Assuming you have been on your best behavior (and you don't contact her for something else in the interim, i.e. a thank you note), I would say you should wait at least until the middle of next week, then call or email to inquire about where they are in the interview process and whether any decisions have been made. If not, ask what she things their timing may be and ask her if she has a suggestion as to when it might be appropriate for you to check in again if you still haven't heard. Good luck!

I agree with the previous answer. If you haven't followed up with a "thank you", you should do it now. Then wait a week to contact her.

If you have sent a "thank you" already, call her Friday afternoon. People are in much better and chattier mood just before a weekend. Most definitely avoid calling on Monday.

Also you don't want to start with something like "What did you decide?" Rather you should ask if she has more questions about your qualification.

Best wishes.
