If you have a hardware firewall (like a router or a cable modem that came with firewall protection) in addition to the personal firewall (software-based) on your computers, it will be far more difficult for someone to get through your defences.

This is because a hardware firewall uses an IP (viewable to the internet) which is different than the actual one used by your network. So, every time you connect to the internet, the only IP it sees is the firewall IP, not your home network IP.)

Some software firewalls can do this as well, but they are not as robust in their defences.

There are a lot of things that play into a correct answer here. If you just want to know if it is generally possible, the answer would be "yes."

Firewalls are not magic bullets. Too, the maximum benefit comes only if you know how to configure them. Software firewalls are not usually considered as solid a protective shield as hardware firewalls, but they are much better than having no firewall at all.

If this is something of concern to you, you might want to read up on how to make your home network safer. There is a lot of free information out there, and maybe this can help ease your mind.

That depends upon the firewall. Some are much better than others. Interestingly, the Windows firewall is actually pretty good. I've run some penetration testing against it and have yet to breech it successfully. I was able to launch a denial of service attack against it, but that was about it. Almost any firewall is vulnerable to that.

I'm currently using an IPCop firewall, version 1.4.11. It has proven to be quite bulletproof as well. And it has been pretty much impossible to fingerprint the systems in the DMZ with NMap accurately as well.

Security is almost non existent in the computer world. Anybody can access your computer if thay know your IP address. All they need to do is hack through one of the HTTP ports and they're in. A firewall is just a proxy server located on the computer. If they can get that far then they can get anything they want. for more info you can email me at: mgdk_lib@yahoo.com

every computer connected to the internet is vulnerable but if you have a firewall this is a good first step. make sure your computer is turned off at night its good for the environment and people won't be able to connect to it if it is turned off. ;)

someone is leading you astray i think. if you have a firewall i think you are better protected than most. make sure you have a up to date anti virus program as well (avg is good and also free). also ad aware kills spyware.
