i am so stuck on these two chemistry questions. I have been trying for a really long time to answer them. If anybody could help me I would greatly appreciate it.
1. Can you calculate the atomic mass by totaling the mass of the mass of each isotope ? Explain.
2. Explain differences in atomic masses determined by different groups.
If anybody could help that would be so great. Thaks!!!

1. yes. you can find the atomic mass by finding the average of all isotopes of a particular element.
2. Every element has a different amount of protons so the atomic mass of each will be different.
(not to sure about 2)

The atomic mass is determined by the number of protons an atom has. The lighter the mass, the higher to the top of the periodic table of elements. That is why Helium, Hydrogen, Oxygen are all low numbers. The heavier (radioactive) are at the bottom. Then you have transition metals in the middle. There are a few more groups but I'll let you do some of the work!

1-The atomic mass (amu) of an individual atom is obtained by adding the atoms protons + neutrons.

On a larger scale each element contains a number of isotopes. The amu (which appears as a decimal while it should be a whole number) is obtained by taking a set number of atoms (6.023 x 10 to the 23rd) and averaging them.

2-Number two is stated in a way that is confusing? Determined by different groups? If that means that different Periodic Tables have different average amu's it is because when you grab that certain number of atoms you get a different number of isotopes each time.

If by groups you mean 'families' then amu's increase as you you down through a family as the atoms increase in size.

. . . and if you didn't know . . . know you do . . .
