I have more than one (sorry, but each one is UNIQUE) -

ER Braithwaite who wrote 'To Sir with Love' - it made me cry when I read excerpt from it (I was 13 years old and it was in my school curriculum)

The other one is Chinua Achebe - his book "Things Fall Apart" taught me a lot about Africa.

Another book ROOTS by Alex Haley also taught me about the history of African Americans to an extent.

When I read a book, I pretty much have no idea what the person who wrote it looks like. Maybe some of my favorite books were written my black people. I don't know. I have favorite books, not having anyting to do with the skin color of who wrote them.

Richard Wright. He was an American Camus, Dostoevsky. I share his existential point of view. However, Ralph Ellison is a better writer...another Hugo or Dickens...a supreme talent in constructing sentences. August Wilson is our best playwright, Rita Dove one of our best poet. When I say "our" I'm referring to Americans' best...Wilson is a poet. Dove is very moving...plus, I've met her and she was pretty, and strong. And James Baldwin was as much a stylist as Truman Capote. Wow! And this new crop, the Johnsons,
impossible, black writers are as diversified as white writer...Wright or Ellison, I guess.
