There are 3 kinds of sand/gravel that work well-

Typical aquarium sand- this is the fine stuff. You can use 'playbox sand' (which is supposed to be very clean), but sand from fish stores will be even cleaner. The problem with this kind of sand is that a.) it is a pain to clean, and b.) it gets kicked into the filters easily and can damage many kinds of filters.

Fine gravel (BB-size or so) is about perfect. It is good for turtles, plants, etc. and is fairly easy to clean.

Pea-zised or larger gravel is also good.

Many people use nothing at all- really easy to clean that way!

AVOID 'typical' aquarium gravel, especially colorful stuff. The sharpness can injure turtles, the size makes it easy to eat but hard to pass, and the colors seem to 'trick' turtles into eating it.
