Are record companies simply marketing minimal talent as "super sluts" that will sell? Shouldn't we all be ashamed, we who either buy this crap, or look at this stuff? It does look Good. Sort of.

Shakira is NOT a slut, nor is she being marketed as one. She is not a manufactured artist. She has been writing all of her OWN music since she was 8 years old, and she has been recording with Sony since she was 13. She started belly dancing when she was a small child; this comes from her Lebanese background and not any "sluttiness" that you attribute to her. Her wardrobe showcases her dance moves; when she is not belly dancing, she wears t-shirts to perform.
Since her earliest albums, she has been able to maintian an incredible amount of creative control over her work, in everything from writing to post-production. For a new artist, that was uneard of, especially for a young Latina female. Her first hit single was back in 1995 - and EVERY one of her albums since then has been multiplatinum and multi-award winning. She has written and recorded over 80 songs (NOT just "Hips Don't Lie"). If you actually listened to any of them, you would know that it is not "crap" and it does not represent "minimal talent." Her lyrics are amazing, and her voice is incredibly unique and beautiful.

She is also a humanitarian - she started her own charity organization in Colombia that builds schools for children displaced by violence. She speaks at least 4 languages. She has a 140 IQ. I could go on. She is incredible.

Surprisingly the large number of people buying the music are young girls between the ages of 13-17. The record companies know they only need a hit, nothing that is going to stand the test of time. Reason being their market will grow up and grow out of liking the current pop sensation.

They are marketing *image* and marketing that image to the younger girls. Look at how copied Madona was when she was younger. She had to change her sound and try to be a better singer (even took voice lessons) as she matured and lost that younger crowd.

It's all about the package... an average voice and a hot looking person will sell more than a hot voice and an average looking person.

Sex sells.
