I think it wanted to be a little of both. I'd say it succeeded more on the mystic level.
Costuming was nice. ; )

I'm not sure if the my answer is suitable for your question, but I believe the climax mystic sensation you get is when Christian Bale enters Sean Bean secret room in which he kept his literature's, painting & music. You can feel the whole point of the movie when he play ""Sumphoney No. 9 for Beethoven" which was a great magnificent touch of the director to choose that particular piece of music which was brilliant of him. (Beethoven composed that symphoney when being deaf). If you knew that information and figued the piece when it was played then you would've got that tingling chill during the scene.

I did. Seems like it's the direction we're going. It certainly wasn't the first movie with this idea, but it was the first one that really creeped me out and made me *feel* it.
