alfie - I'm American and I remember John Major as being one of the two politicians to renege on his promise to the Northern Republican Army (IRA and Sinn Fein) that there would be talks of a United Ireland if they would impliment and sign the Peace Agreement to give up their arms. He later stated, after the agreement was signed, that he never made such a statement. Shortly thereafter, the other politician that sided with Major on future talks of a United Ireland, Bertie Ahern of the Republic of Ireland, resigned his office.
Other than that, Major didn't give much of anything other than lip service. He should have been an American politician.

Looking cool, winning arguments and having lots of power. The days of the Gentleman Leader are gone. Poor old Gladstone. Slept with the window open till he died aged 81. Probably got frostbite the plonker.

Not all politicians are the same, so why would you lump them all together?
You should have said "most" politicians.
Anyway, in the instance of most politicians, they care about "Power" most.
If you have been successfull in your career, you eventually get bored with your job or profession and begin to crave power.
Its as simple as that. Power is hard to get and hard to hang onto.
Its takes influence and money and money is Power.
It's a vicious circle that once begun is difficult to leave.
Power is like hard drugs (Addictive) Taste it once and your hooked.

They only care about themselves and lining their back pocket with cash. I'm sure you've seen pictures of them smiling and shaking hands after leaving some spurious meeting - well it's because they just done some deal to increase their fortune and make the normal people suffer even more.

Getting their name in the history books! John Major has a lot to answer for! He was a nice bloke and a good leader, but he did nothing of note in our history. Therefore the sands of time will forget him, and ever since him politicians will do anything, regardless of ANYTHING just so that they can be remembered for SOMETHING!

they care most about their constituents because they are the ones who elect them. if you ever need anything resolved that you cannot resolve yourself -- call your congressman. they are the ones who make the government do it's job. the government so often fails at the tasks it assumes so that the purpose of a politician is to correct it's mistakes and enable it to fuction in the manner it was intended.
if you ever encounter a problem with an agency or government affiliate or even some organization periferally involved in the government, the words they most fear to hear are: this is congressman's .......... office calling...."

The politicians job (and what they work at most) it to be re-elected.
It is not their job to represent their constiuency.
It is not their job to run the government.
Everything is entered into a simple equation "Will this help me get elected"
It's that simple.
