Hot water bottles were developed from the medieval practice of the servant girl warming their master/mistress's bet with hot coals. Various methods were employed until in, I think, Victorian times they invented a ceramic bottle which could be filled with hot water and placed at the foot of the bed. Hence the name "hot water bottle", even though these days they are called "electric blankets"! How technology marches on!
