Does participating in Boy Scouts increase your chances of getting into a good college? I ask this because I heard different answers from both my parents and I wanted some more opinions. Also, what are some awards that would be great to earn that would be impressive on a college resume.Thanks...

Actually, yes it does. The first two answers are just flat out wrong. Some of the main principles of the Boy Scouts are volunteership, leadership, and community involvement. These are are things that colleges look for in an applicant. Doing volunteer work, taking on leadership roles, and being involved n your community absolutely helps your application. In fact, at the most competetive schools, it's basically a requirement. Participating in Boy Scouts in one form of community involvement. It's going to get you in on its own, but it's one more aspect of your application that counts in your favor. Telling colleges about volunteer work you did as a boy scout, or leadership roles you might have had in the program will absolutely help. They also like to see long-term commitment to things, so if you were a Boy Scout for many years that would help, too. However, I doubt they'd care how many merit badges you have.

As for awards, there aren't many awards that wouldn't look good (ok, maybe the "juvenile detention inmate of the month" wouldn't be so hot, but just about anything else). Little things they don't care much about though - as a general rule, the more work you had to do or the more competitive it was the more impressive it looks.

Yes, the college are interested in what sort of person you are, and your preferred activities tell them more about that than any amount of personal character waffle on a resume. If you are participating in Boy Scouts or any other voluntary or youth organisation, actions speak louder than words. Forget about the awards, unless they specifically ask.

no, it will not help you get into a college, to get into college, you will have a transcript, which states your grades and GPA, your SATS and 3 essays. Putting "I was a boy scout" on the essays will not help you get into a college as it doesnt affext you as a person. I also do encourage you to go to Boy sscouts just for a good cause.
