City Amusement Parks - Disneyland Resort Hotels & Park will also put you in the vicinity of Knotts Berry Farm
OR San Diego with Seaworld, Old Town, Gaslamp district
Beach Quiet - Monterey Penninsula, close to Big Sur, MBAquarium, beaches, wildlife
Beach City - Santa Monica & Venice Beach
California Country/Mountains - Kern River, Kernville
Camping? Try the California State Park system...there are many campsites along the coast that are wonderful!
Wine Tasting? Can't beat the Napa Valley northeast of San Francisco.
It really does depend on what you want to do... To travel from San Fran down to LA is about an 10 hour drive along the coast (Hwy1) with ALOT to see and do in between... if you like non-amusement park type things... there is Big Sur, Julia Pfieffer State Beach, Hearst Castle, Morro Rock, Santa Barbara along the way...
May is a wonderful month pretty much along the whole coast... maybe some residual rain from spring... but not much.
Have fun!

It depends on what you like to do in vacation.
I will say Monterey is a good place. You have beaches near by and you have natures around that area. The weather is nice and mild. If you want to go to San Francisco, it is about 2 hours of driving away.

I am from Los Angeles. I love it here, but it really is not the best place for tourists. Our city is so spread out that it is very hard to get around. Plus, our traffic drives a lot of non-Californians crazy. If you plan on renting a car, by all means, please come and visit Los Angeles (our weather is really nice in May.) However, should you want more of a walking-type of vacation, choose San Francisco. It is very pretty up there as well.
