Trying to surprise my wife by being abnormally "cool" looking (as opposed to the usual jeans and a t-shirt).

Jeans are cool, try a name brand polo type with blues, grays or brown. the shoes make the outfit. try some boots or Nike tennis shoes

How about a "nice" t-shirt (meaning new - preferrably from Banana Repub or the like), with a long sleeve shirt with either a fun/funky pattern/colors or a silkscreen design, a nice but still semi-casual jacket and 'nice/dress casual' jeans or pants (maybe a cargo pant?) and for shoes, I'd say either a pair of driving moccasins or some Diesel stylized sport shoes.

Good luck - and don't worry - she'll be so happy you made the effort, it may not even matter if you get it 'right'. ;)

that's perfectly fine and guys don't have many options as in looking cool besides jeans. what are you going to wear spandex? your fine man trust me if she thinks it's lame it's because she's an airhead dump her if she does. Good luck man bye!!

when I was 37 I wore leisure suits they were real "cool"

well, how about a nice evening out with her and don a sweet suit..guys of all ages look great....I MEAN GREAT....in a suit!
