I know i'm not a bloke but i like some grey eyeshadow with black eyeliner. I like dior pencil eyeliner which is waterproof. There is a bit for helping you smudge it across. This gives u a smoky look while not making it as harsh as black. Also because it is waterproof it does not end up half way down your face on a night out. If you try light grey and add a touch of dark grey in the corners it really finishes the look without making you look like you have had a round with mike tyson.

Use grey eyeliner and black mascara - it'll give you great smouldering eyes without making you look like a tramp. Or if you do want to use black, only use it on your top set of lashes. Never ever use black eyeshadow unless you are going to a halloween party or trying to look as if you have been punched in the face.

Black is always classic, but I prefer the smokey look that often seems to add a bit more mist and mystery to a woman's aura. Though at work, I often choose the black instead.

Gray eye shadow with black eyeliner and maybe a little black in the crease

I prefer grey - just black can be a little much. Grey definitely gives you the drama you want without being overwhelming.

i'm an artist, so even though female...here goes:
black makes the rest of your face look pale and your eyes stand out more. its good if you want to draw attention to it in this manner, if your eyes are not your best feature you might want to not use black?
grey is good for making the whites of your eyes appear whiter and creates a youngish years kind of look because generally childrens eyes have the whites appear whiter and more pure. grey is also good to make blue eyes look bluer, and adds character to green / light brown eyes. its less harsh than black which can overwhelm.

I think grey is more subtle and easier to suit any eye colour. whereas black is very dramatic, so it depends on what "look" you are trying to achieve :)
