I am just wondering what other people's views on raising the minimum wage are.

We should raise the minimum wage to a level high enough for people to be able to live off it without having to work over-time.

Raising the minimum wage for political purposes and trying to impose financial burdens on business without them receiving any commensurate increase in productivity is a policy ripe for failure. Minimum wage was never intended to be a "living wage" as they say. Why should it be? Generally, it was an introductory wage for most teenagers getting their first job during their high school years. The intent is (and should continue to be) to have people work their way up the wage ladder.

Pols seem to want many to start at a higher wage, regardless of their skill level. They need to understand that this is not another extension of government assistance programs. Pols should not be tinkering with the free markets (the real world) because the inevitable result is that they screw it up (happens every time). Let the market forces determine what is appropriate.

Raise it.

The missing part of every argument I have heard about this topic (which is on the ballot next month in this state - Arizona) is that the wage actually shrinks each year as the dollar steadily devalues. This is not really a raise, more like a partial restoration.

The data from states that have a high minimum wage shows opposite from what detractors claim; instead of hurting business, what actually happens is that businesses increase their sales & services across the board, possibly because there is more money in people's pockets after the bills & supermarket.

Considering minimum wage has not been raised since 1996, it needs to be raised. Those who oppose minimum wage being raised, let me ask you this question: How has your customer service been lately? These are the people that minimum wage is hurting, those in the service industry. People who are working 2 and 3 jobs to make ends meet. That Bush income tax bonus check helps to pay the rent are buy groceries -- ONE TIME, the rest of the year the family struggles. I believe this country has forgotten Newts Contract with America but it was really Contract ON America.

Enrons, WorldComs, and Tyco Executives has stolen hand over fist and the middle to low income families are struggling to to have enough money to run out with the month and not have the money run out before the month does. Many people are barely living paycheck to paycheck and as the "Land of Oppportunity" that is no way for people to live.

The minimum wage hasn't been rasied in ten years, but you can bet your bottom dollar those lying politicians have raised theirs and folk not making minimum wage are paying THEIR salaries.

So yes I agree with others who have stated the min wage should be raised to $10 an hour, at least that gives them to money to pay rent ON TIME and not to have to wait until the next paycheck to have the rent money and risk getting evicted. Oh politicians don't have to worry about that one -- do they?

You must be joking! When ever the minimum wage was raised,My pay never went up but prices sure did! Why not give the workers a break and put in a COLA (cost of living adjustment) indexed to the inflation rate? Liberals should try living in the real world once in a while!

The minimum wage is nothing more than a price floor on labor, which results in a surplus of the same. Single teenagers almost exclusively benefit from the wage increase while everyone suffers from the increase in prices resulting from higher operating expenses. Minimum wage is the pet of the Democratic party because they know they can us it to fool ignorant Americans into voting for them. I blame that more on the ignorant Americans than I do on the Democrats.

Minimum wage causes unemployment. Some jobs are not worth minimum wage and cease to exist.

Since there are no taxes on business(they pass it on to us through the price), every minimum wage increase puts small business out of business. There's a local business in my town and the owner only makes $2 an hour because of forced min wage and workers comp, insurance, etc.

Why are people so happy to let the government take control of our lives?

Raise the minimum wage to about $10 an hour. That would be enough to scrape by, and only have to work one job.

my opinion is that minimum wage has been too low for too many years. We need to get it up to go with the cost of living, I don't know how they expect people to work for this and take care of a family no wonder so many want to stay on welfare and let us support them.
