I would say no to the sports coat, try a blazer that is tailored. (Sports coat says plaid tweed and leather elbows to me) If you wear it with jeans try a fitted vintage t-shirt underneath, in a contrasting color.

so whatever u want.
no one cares if it's in or not. as long as you like it and look good in it, then cool.

Hey I know a guy with the name Robert H. - Anyway ...I think it looks really good. Just make sure your shoes go well. Don't wear timberlands or some kind of boots with it as I have seen some guys do. But you would know better anyway.
