Shouldn't people be getting smarter as we make scientific discoveries? Human knowledge has increased exponentially in the last century or so, so why are people, in general, so incredibly stupid?

It's not the government nor religion. It is because man chooses to be ignorant, or stupid as you put it.
Sceince just enlightens our eyes to what is already present in the world. It broadens our senses of creation that is around us.
Technology is a gift of understanding that is either accepted or rejected. And in reality, it is accepted...blindly. We are a society that can puch a button or turn a knob or flip a switch but rarely does any of us know how something works. It could be we are becoming more "stupid" every day.
For instance, how many know how a toilet works? Or how a motor runs?
Or how a tree grows. All we know are the mechanics of growth, but for a dead seed to come alive and mature into a several hundred pound tree is miraculous!
Birth is one of the most fasinating miracles known to man. Only the mechanics are known. The conception and growth of a human body is beyond our intelligence! But it happens every day.
We are blessed to know what we know, but we are very far from understanding what we know. We just know it works and we take advantage of it!

because of the new technologies and new discoveries..
people are to lazy to think....
for example: the calculator
people use the calculator even though the answer could be just so simple (exept the realy hard ones)
And the people then (many years ago) discovered stuff that are here right now.. so theres nothing left for us to discover.
Some also would just be so lazy to learn coz they wanna have fun and they want to enterrain themselves by doing stupid stuff.

People are amazingly stupid, and the funniest thing about it is, ALL of the information they need to be SMART is right up in their little brains...unfortunately, they're not smart enought to REALIZE it and ACCESS the information.
Technology has accelerated the stupidity level of people because they THINK technology will do everything for them, and of course, that idea is STUPID, because it will NOT.

There are some people who don't have any common sense. not every one of us have the capabilities to expand our knowledge, so each and everyone of us do dumb things at one point or another in our life. It is part of learning.

because people just lay back and become slugs and take ever-thing they get handed as right they dont know any diffrace that is what they where told.

the knowledge is there, but some people refuse to receive it. they feel what they already know is more than enough; they are apathetic to expanding their minds. the main cause of this: religion.

its called being lazy...to many distractions for kids....they have to much money and to many hobbies to care about education....not enough reading...etc..
