I wonder if a spinster could become a degree, too.

In the USA colleges and universities award several different degrees.

Some schools give a degree after two years of post-secondary (after high school) study. That is called the Associate of Arts or Associate of Science A.A. or A.S.

Most colleges award a degree after four years of study, usually this is B.A (or sometimes they use the latin form, A.B.) the Bachelor of Arts, or if the student has taken mostly science courses, the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) or sometimes a specialized Bachelor's , like Bachelor of Science in Engineering, in Nursing, in Fine Arts - BSE, BSN, BFA.... and there are a few others.

A bachelor's degree is a 4 year degree in either the Liberal Arts field or Science field.
