I can see why someone would hate another person based on that person's personality or attitude, but why do some people treat others like dirt based on something they cannot change (i.e. looks)?

Some people? I hate to say it, but everybody does. Even if they think they don't, on a subconscious level, they still do. Including you.

Honey I don't think it is right to judge people by their appearance. It is whats on the inside that counts. Some people just aren't as compassionate as others and can't see the good in other people. I always try to find some good in everyone. We all have our good points and some faults also. You sound like a very intelligent and compassionate person. There should be more like you out there. God Bless you. Never judge a book by it's cover.

Because when you meet somebody their appearance is the first thing they see. It would be completely different if the world was blind. But we don't live in that fantasy world... everyday we have to deal with critism... and it is not only on our looks but our attitude as well. People who think they are good looking usually treat others badly because they pain on the inside. They are no better than anybody just because they look 'beautfiul'.

A very good question! I feel the same way!

There is more to humanity than what lies on the surface. If people weren't so selfish these days, they'd take the time to notice this.

Today's society has become superficial. They are only concerned with looks, money, or how well some is in bed.

There is more to a person's life than those listed above. But society has chosen to become blind to that fact.

this is an age old question that only time may tell. i think that its because some people just dont take the time to go past looks and they are just judging cause they can. it is idiotic judgemental and people like that should get taught a lesson but for now we cant really do anything to change it. we cant change them. like the saying from Hoodwinked (movie) goes.
"You cant judge a book from its cover, you have to flip through its pages"

Because they are mean. They are using the famous expression "first impressions count". So let's say someone wear sweatshirts and jeans with a hole in the leg, you would think that person is poor, but these people doesn't know what that expression means. The expression is just for job seekers trying to impress their future employer. Not a stranger impressing someone they don't know.

in today's world you have to be perfect. You have to wear certain clothes, not be fat, instead of looking on the inside of people they would rather judge the outside. There are some really beautiful people out there who may not look like a star but they have a big heart, aren't stuck-up and walking like they are all that. Any body can make themselves look good on the outside but on the inside they are nasty and don't care for people who aren't like them.

It's a true sign of ignorance, intolerance and their own insecurities.

How can one hate someone they have never met?

Many things such as parental influence, peer pressure and stereotyping contribute to these character flaws.

I think once you get out of the comfort of your own backyard you will find that diversity is something you should not fear but embrace.

My mother used to tell us the story about a family she knew growing up. She said that there was an unmarried daugther in the family, and that my father used to tell my mom."I hate to say this but that is one of the ugliest girls I have ever seen." After the girl's parents got sick, she stayed at home and nursed them and never once complained. After my dad saw the love she had for her parents, he stated"You know, that is one of the most beautiful girls I have ever seen." The moral of this story is--Its all inside!

It's human nature to judge based on what we see. Most of the time looks acurately judge something. i.e red stove burner, it's hot; puddles on the sidewalk it rained.
