Lap-Band is a laproscopic procedure, meaning they make a teeny tiny hole and put a band around the upper portion of your stomach. Gastric BYPASS is totally different. It's a band, too, but then they also re-route your intestines to make a shorter path, so less is absorbed. I haven't heard of gastric band, but if I were to guess, I would say a non-laproscopic version of the first one.

There are risks to anything, but the risks to the bypass are much more serious and common than lapband risks. However, most of the deaths and infections by bypass patients were self-induced (i.e. not following the food restrictions, or eating like it's Thaksgiving with a 2oz stomach). People do lose more with the bypass, though, so it's a personal choice. I for one, would recommend the band. My mother had it done in 1994, and went from 380 pounds to her current 250. She is still overweight, but that's most likely because she never had her band adjusted, and she thinks ice cream and butter are two of the food groups. :)

Go ahead and look into it. Talk to your doctor, ask about the nearest bariatric surgery center that accepts your insurance. They will have you come to a seminar there, so you will learn more about it then. There are dietary changes, lifestyle changes, and side effects, but since obesity is the number 2 killer in America (and bariatric surgery is NOT #1), I'd say it is worth the risks. Good luck!! ♥ ♥

Hey, I know this one...They are separate procedures. In the lap band, they just tie off part of your stomach, so you'll just fill full faster. PROS: It is completely reversable. CONS: Not as effective as the gastric bypass, you have to go back every once in a while for adjustments, some insurance won't cover it.

The gastric bypass actually cuts and reroutes your intestines and does permanent changes. PROS: More effective because A: makes your stomach smaller, B: Uses the "mal-absorptive" process because your food is not in your intestines as long so less calories get absorbed. Since it is permanent, you never have to worry about it again. Most insurance covers it, CONS: More risks of complications than lapband, its permanent.

Either way will help. In both cases you have to follow rules for the rest of your life suchas you cant drink fliuds before and after you eat. If you have the gastric bypass, there is a 30% change you will get "dumping syndrom" every time you eat sugary stuff...but that is good, It makes you not want that stuff. In Either way you have to be 100 pounds over weight to qualify. Hope all this stuff helped

lap band and gastric band do the same job. The difference lays in the surgery. Lap band is done using a laparoscope, while gastric band requires an abdominal incision.
I don't know where you are, but in my area, many of the hospitals are offering free seminars which answer all questions about any kind of gastric surgery or procedure. Suggest you call your local hospitals, if they don't offer, they might know who does.

There are some technical differences but they both do the same job when it comes down to the nitty gritty...they stop food entering the stomach at the usual rate.
Have you tried diet and exercise. Surgery is a drastic and expensive option and should not be seen as an "easy" option.

Weight loss surgery-like gastric bypass /lap band surgery / stomach stapling and gastrectomy have become very common and very safe now. My cousin got her Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in India. She has lost more than 65 lbs in 5 months and is very happy with the results. The price for obesity surgery is very less in India. My cousin just paid 25% of the cost she was quoted in America. She got her surgery from a company called Forerunners Healthcare.

Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines. I have read a lot of their patient stories also. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as bariatric surgery and weight loss surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that your Obesity surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps.
