According to the map in the 1996 presidential election Michigan had 18 electoral votes. In the 2004 presidential election Michigan had 17 electoral votes. Why was Michigan's number of electoral votes reduced? HINT: It happens every decade!!!

Although Michigan grew in population by 643,147 from 1990 thru 2000, some states (like Arizona and Florida) grew at a faster rate. Since the 538 electoral votes are evenly distributed (roughly) amongst the states based on population, Michigan lost one electoral vote.

By the way, it doesn't happen every decade. Michigan electoral votes didn't change in 1900, 1920, 1940, or 1970.
