Ok- You start with your equation
a+6a-9=30
*Then combine like terms and get
7a-9=30
**Then add nine to both sides
7a=39
***Divide by seven on both sides
a=5.57 (long decimal so i rounded)

Get yours a's on one side, and your numbers on the other, then solve for a:

a + 6a - 9 = 30

Add 9 to both sides to get:

a + 6a = 39

Combine your a terms:

7a = 39

Divide both sides by 7:

a = 39/7

And, voila, there is your answer.

Hope that helped. You can solve all problems of this type with this same methodology.

Good luck! :-)
