Read a book called Entropy: Into the Greenhouse World, by Jeremy Rifkin. Then ask if it is possible. He basically advocates the return to agrarian culture. I don't believe it is totally possible. The Pandora's box is open. Are we as a society going to give up the technology that we are live with. It includes giving up this little computer thing. It includes giving up any mass production industry. But we can tread a little lighter.

Encourage the retrofit of existing buildings and building new construction to a higher energy efficiency with tax incentives. Higher energy efficiency meaning the natural resources used to heat cool light, that is what matters, not solar power for solar power's sake. I'm not knocking solar power and heating, just saying the amount of resources used in the building, maintaining a building is more important than the amount of BTU used, the pollution created, etc. But what is probably more important is mixed used neighborhoods, to cut the use of the car. So how do you get the developers to think that way? Also mass transit helps. Alternative fuels, of course. And a very unpopular solution, but maybe necessary for industry is nuclear energy. Environmentalist don't like it, but it is better than the coal fumes. Just a thought.
