I like to break in a new pair starting 3 weeks before the marathon. the first week, I just use them for walking to loosen them up, and use older shoes for training. the second week, I use the new shoes for the shorter training runs. the week of the marathon, use the new shoes for all your runs, you shouldnt have any long ones the week of the marathon anyway.

4 to 6 weeks prior to the race your are training for. This way you won't blister yourself during the race and your shoes will be broken in. You should get new running shoes when the tread wears down smooth an inch or more from the edges OR SOONER.
