hi fellow answerer's,

i'll be visiting tucson arizona for a weekend in early november and was hoping to get some good suggestions from folks on where to go, what to see, where to eat, things to do? i'll be at U of A and have a car to travel anywhere, although my hotel is in tucson.

are there good websites for me to check outside of the usual?

i'm adventurous so ok w/ outdoors stuff but also enjoy a great meal and non sporty activities too.

thank you!

If you like the outdoors, drive down to the Kavartcher Caverns. Tombstone is good for a laugh too (definitely cheesy & touristy though so be prepared). If you are driving down from Phoenix, gotta stop and see 'The Thing'...again good for giggles. I don't know much in the town itself though they do have a Observatory somewhere near there (maybe at UofA) that is well renowned, Kitt Peak I think. I believe Biosphere is out that way too if you are into that sort of thing. Check 'about.com', search for Tucson then link to Places to See/Things to Do. They always have good info. Also lots here:

I have lived in Tucson all my life and I love it. Do not go to Tombstone, its a waste of time and gas.
The desert museum is actually kinda like a zoo also. You can see all of the native wildlife in there natural setting. Go in the afternoon cause the animals are out more then.
Head up to Mt. Lemon for the day. Great hiking trails, views of Tucson and ride the ski lift. Sabino Canyon is beautiful but it might still be damaged when you come because of flash flooding this monsoon season.
San Xavier Del Bac was the first mission here in Tucson. It is so beautiful and moving to see the inside of the church that has been there for hundreds of years. Try to get into a UofA Football or Basketball game, they are so much fun.
The best places to eat are as follows,
Casa Molina-authentic Mex. food @ 6225 E. Speedway
Caruso's-Greatest Italian food ever, it's even better than Olive Garden. @ 434 N. 4th Ave.
Pinnacle Peak-Best Steak House in town, @ 6541 E Tanque Verde Rd.
Old Tucson Studios is great and is where a lot of old western movies were filmed. Now there are rides, gun shows, and great gift shops.
some other things i can think of are, two Indian casinos, kartchner caverns, downtown shopping, the symphony, local bands play at Scrappy's, and so much more. If when your here and you don't know what to do, just ask one of the locals and you'll discover amazing things.

In Tucson, the Old Movies Studios, a few miles west, is a must. During the summer, it is cheaper but does not have the full range of activities. There is a shortage of shade, so take advantage at every opportunity. Sabino Canyon is also recommended. Tip, do not sit in the open when being taken into the Canyon. Make sure you choose a shaded car. Tombstone, about 80 miles south west, is a little disappointing. Nogales, on the Mexican border is worth a trip if only to see the culture differences. Park in a secure lot. On the Mexican side you are often approached by vendors with jewelry. The Water Park off Tangerine Road is OK. Discount vouchers on their website. Wear sandals between rides as the ground burns your feet.

The Desert Museum is a must see. Tombstone is a couple hour drive away, but is also interesting. There are also several wineries within a couple hour drive that are fun to tour. If you like the outdoors, there is plenty of hiking in the outskirts of Tucson. Also, Tucson is a great place to go for bike riding.

omg, tucson, u know, if U of A wasnt in tucson, i would be 100% sure that i would want to go to that school. that city is so dirty and trashy to me. good thing you like the outdoors because there are mountains and more mountains. i think the one nice thing about tucson besides the university is mount lemon or what ever the huge mountain is called. its almost like a whole different place up there. someone said tombstone and that would be a cool place to visit. the biosphere is just outside tucson and i heard that is pretty neat. hope u have fun.

You should go to tombstone it is a fun day trip. If you are staying at the U of A you should check out their Center for creative photography and the art museum there. They have a lot of famous work hanging in both.

Saguaro National Park is beautiful. On it you will find a ghost-townish hollywood set called Old Tuscon which is fun to visit.
