i appliedfor a job with the nhs, and not only did the form ask me my gender, religion, marital status and ethnic origin, it also wanted to know whether i was gay, straight or bisexual!!!! ok, i know there should be equal opportunities but don't you think sexual preferences are more in the realm of the bedroom and private. what's that got to do with your job?

It is nothing to do with the job. this information is confidential and is used for equal opportunities and audit reasons. I would not get offended, and besides you have a right not to mention your sexual orientation on the form

Hmmn I've never encountered that particular question on an application form. I guess if you were applying for a job as a relationship counsellor they might value your input as a homosexual but that's stereotyping then...
yeah that's just plain odd. I hope you refused to complete it. If everyone leaves it blank, they'll remove it from the form.

I don't think your ethnicity should matter either.

Gender and religion I guess could be valid depending on the job you applied for. If you apply for a job as a Dr and they're short on male doctors for example, they may be more likely to recruit you as some patients request a male doctor, same as some request a female doctor. Personal problems are sometimes easier to share with a professional of the same gender.

If you are applying to be a counsellor, and are for example Muslim, they may wish to employ you to run a specific counselling service for Muslims, as you will better understand the cultural implications (one exists at my university).

But I entirely agree with you on sexual preferences. That is of no relevancy, and you should not be asked to offer this information.

It shows, the nhs budget is wasted on middlemen, designing forms, checking thier politically correct, checking they conform to this and that, and justifying their own salareies.
The government, who dont have a clue how to run a hospital, were so afraid of individual bandages, not being accounted for, they assumed sacking medical staff, to employ office boys, would guarantee better reults, financially.
All these office boys, have nothing to do, so make work for themselves, the only way they know, shuffling and inventing forms, to justify thier jobs.

Of the things you mentioned, the only things an employer can legally ask is gender, marital status, and ethnicity but they cannot legally require you to answer the ethnic question.

It is illegeal to ask those things unless it is a job with a religious group like a Church where being a follower of their faith is required. Often times the EDD will have people fill an optional form so they know what groups are working and what groups aren't. You can refuse to fill it out though.

Your employer are only entitled to ask you those questions for their Equal Opportunites Monitoring - they are not allowed to use those details to determine your suitability for the job.

Naturally all the details are supposed to be confidential.

If you dont like answering those questions there is usually a "prefer not to say" option on the form - tick that!

You can be requested to voluntarily give most of that... gender and marital status usually have to do with taxes but the rest is voluntary.

What is NHS?

Nowadays your sexual preference seems to be just as important if not more important than your gender!!! I mean one important part of life is having gay best friend so its pretty important to know what peoples sexual preference is!
Thats strange though I've never heard of putting your sexual preference-I mean what about if you swing or you don't know?
Are you meant to put "I'm still exploring"!!
Weird!

I think the employer in question must be gay, you will know if you get the job lol, probably as his personal assistant.
Mind you it all depends on what you write down..so good luck..!!

Basically it has nothing whatsoever to do with them and I find it a cheek that they even ask it!

they may have other intentions.... you're not obliged to answer it- i wouldn't. I don't even answer the question to my race or sex. Why is any of that important apart from the fact that i am able and qualified to do the job- fk it- i've never received an application back and nor have i been refused an interview for any job when not completing those sections. You're within your rights to not answer if you don't like.
