Is it safe to unlock a Sony Ecricsson k800i from vodafone to 02?

vodaphone owns Verizon wireless, who is a CDMA carrier, which the K800 wouln't work on, since, I belive, it is a GSM phone. If you verify that it IS an UNLOCKED GSM phone, then it would be a good buy! Then, in the U.S. you could put a T-mobile, or Cingular SIM card into it.
