Reconstruction was supposed to help bring the South back into the Union. To re-align themselves with thier Northern Brothers. But I think the Republican party went about it the wrong way. Southern way of life was filled with frills and festivity. To make them accept the Unions way of life, which to them was ho hum and drab, only pushed the Southerners into a state of confusion more than a new way of life.

One for sure was not taking direct hand in educating the freedmen of that era. I ask how can a people know anything about their new world after a long hard life of non-education, displacement, and mis-trust. Yes there were political leaders that stepped up to the opportunity but as a whole a nation should be ready to guide the flotsam of lost souls that will wonder the country. To teach, i.e. How to buy and sell land. How to locate and use post. How to start a business. If these tools had been implemented during that era there would be no need for affirmative action today.

Oh, of course. Blame the republicans... how original.

You DO of course realize that the reconstruction wouldn't have even happened if not for the Republican's war to put an end to slavery, right?
