Its just a matter of family traditions and opinions. Maybe you can compromise. Try waking them really early in the morning, like 4:00 AM.

It was tradition in my family to get up at 5:00AM and open presents, then we would watch a movie and take a nap.

I think it makes it exciting for the kids -- no matter what time it is! I know that when I was little, waking up really early (which midnight might feel like) was very different from our normal schedule, and made everything seem really special and set apart from our normal routine. At our house, waking up in the early morning is the tradition, but I can understand midnight, too.

Maybe you can compromise? Wake up the kids at midnight to open one present and then tell them that they can open the rest in the morning? I'll bet you, though, that your kids are going to want to stay up to open presents -- if that's the case, it would sound to me like the joy of Christmas is still there, whether it's midnight or early morning!

Jewish or not, I will not wake up my kids to open anything. That's crazy. Kids need their sleep and so do the parents. Who wants a bunch of cranky kids fighting with each other just to open a gift. Plus we eat breakfast first and make a big deal of it with family and traditonal family dishes. God's birth is suppose to be celibrated, not enforced. This isn't jail. However, if your husband feels a certain way and you are not sure if it is based on his religion or not. You need to find out and find a middle ground. Compromise. Merry Christmas!

There are many different traditions meaning there is no longer a sense of 'normal'. What works for one family will not work for another. You need to sit down with your husband and compromise on this issue. See how important it is to him and express to him how you also feel.

When you marry you begin a new family. Your family needs to develop its own traditions.

It seems kind of cruel to wake up sleeping children, drag them otu of bed, and force them to open gifts. What's the big rush? Let the poor kids sleep- they'll be wound up all day anyway.
I don't know if it's because he's Jewish or because he's kind of cruel!

12am, is he mad? no, I'd want to sleep in until at least 7am! What happens when all the presents are opened? Everyones all tired and wanting to go back to bed, well especially the parents anyway! No, it's a silly idea!!! xx
