Has anyone had a Mirena fitted? How long did it take for the "labour" pains to stop after the fitting? How long before things settled down? Any info would be appreciated.

I had mine fitted last Tuesday and then started my period on Friday. I am still bleeding and having awful period pains and cramping in my stomach and down my legs. Not sure if this is because I started my period or whether to be worried?? Also its a IUS NOT a IUD.

I have had mine for almost a year. I cramped for about 2 days. Not bad...not even period-like cramps. And there was spotting for about 2 months...not bad spotting though. And, I don't have a period anymore...which is common.

Have had a Mirena coil for more than 3 years now. Took about 6 months to adjust completely to having no periods at all. Absolutely fine now, hardly any notice when "I'd have had a period". No real pain when it was fitted in the firs place apart from the very first day... Phone you doc if you're really worried! That's what they're there for!

My cramps settled down and were gone within 24 hours. I had two fitted over a period of six years (+) Cannot recommend them highly enough. Periods became lighter and only had about four a year which they say is fine. I spotted for about five to six weekd after the first one was fitted but was having major problems before hand. The mirena has the same failure rate as sterilization and only has the equivalent amount of progesterone in the actual coil as four contraceptive pills.

IUS is the same thing as an IUD.
The pain only last 1 day for me
it took 3 months for my body to adjust FULLY
Personally I wouldn't worry about the bleeding and cramping your body is still adjusting to a foreign object in your body I know your Dr should have set up an appointment for you in a month and you can adress your concerns then

I guess in the UK Mirena is called an IUS and in the states its an IUD but its the same thing you might want to take a look at this website it gives you a ton of info on Mirena in the UK

I recently had the Mirena (i.u.d) "inserted" about a month or so ago. OMG, the "labor" pains were terrible. I cramped for about 3 days & took Aleve to ease the cramping. I hadn't experienced pains like that since I had my daughter 8 yrs ago. I dislike the sudden & irregular peroids that seem to come whenever. I was told that they will eventually stop. I do feel like I get cramps now before hand & I haven't experienced them since I was a teenager. With the pill I didn't have a period or cramps at all....I just decided to go off of it due to my age & its riskier for me now. To be honest I liked the birthcontrol pill "seasonale" much better. I actually paid $575.00 for the mirena since my health benefits do not cover it. Hope this helps.

First of all, its not a typical "coil" style IUD - its a classic T-shape (with one arm blocking each fallopian tube).

While some women do well with an IUD, many women do not. There are extreme side effects, and an IUD should never be considered unless you've carried a baby to term.

From personal experience, I can tell you my time with an IUD was less than pleasant. My periods were longer, WAY more painful, and came unexpectedly, plus I had spotting nearly every day of the month; orgasms were also painful making sex a non-activity; and eventually it contributed to the progression of PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease) and perforation of my uterus, requiring immediate removal after only 5 months.

I cannot recommend an IUD - regardless of brand. Please consider an alternative.

Smarty - and IUS and an IUD are the SAME THING. One is an Intra-Uterine Device, and the other is and Intra-Uterine System...both are Intra-Uterine Contraceptives...which if you look on their web site they call it an IUCD ... or Intra-Uterine Contraceptive Device. So there.

Had two over 7 years. No problems both times. Pain lasted for a couple of hours after insertion, any longer and I would be questioning 'the fit'
