If you are talking about a wooden fence, yes, it will. That is a very strong piece of plastic wire, moving at super high speeds. The outside surface of a wooden fence oxidizes, which slightly changes the color. When the weed whacker hits it, it scrapes off this oxidized layer, exposing the older, lighter color underneath. This is the mark you are probably seeing.

No,,,, You are not doing it wrong. The "string" is whipping against the fence a leaving the marks. This will happen to the base of trees and mailbox posts. They do make plastic "sleeves" that fits small diameter tree trunks. Nothing for the fence. You'll have to keep the "string" away from it or put up with the marks.

Yes it does that. Try using manual hedge clippers in that spot, or have some protective barrier there when weed-whacking.

I have the same problem. We are probably getting a bit too close or maybe have too much line out.

Use a nylon weed wacker not a metal one and you'll be fine.
