I like Stephen King also, but want to know who else is great. Someone who is not mainstream, but deserves just as much credit.

Bram Stoker, H.P. Lovecraft, Ann Rice, Ira Levin, Shirley Jackson, Ray Bradbury, Robert Louis Stevenson, William Peter Blatty, Mort Castle, Karil Wade, and Robert Aickman. A thumbs down huh? Thank God, the subject matter is subjective, because these authors are among some of the best.

Edgar Allen Poe is the originator of both the horror and detective genres. Stephen King is my personal favorite.

My most personal favorite is Stephen King, who wrote 'The Shining in 1977, and kept on producing hair raising novels such as 'Pet Cemetery', 'Needful Things', 'The Stand', 'Tommyknockers', and has a new novel due out October 24th, called 'Lisey's Story'. Not only has he continued creating bestsellers but he has also tried to help his fellow writer by penning his own formula for writing in a book, written in 2000 titled 'On Writing'. Much applause for Stephen King!

The best is one of the first. Mary Shelley who wrote Frankenstein one dreary, rainy summer on Lake Geneva with her husband Percy and Lord Byron. They made a wager on who could write the best Gothic piece. Only Mary Shelley came through. What would be do without the crazed scientist Victor Frankenstein and his monster ( up for debate) creation?

Edgar Allen Poe. Definitley most original and he's a classic. Everyone loves hearing scary stories from historical figures that died of Opium overdoses.

Edgar Allan Poe is certainly a strong contender.
You might like reading John Saul too.

I don't know why you'd think beyond King, he's one of the best selling authors of all time. He may be the best selling author ever.

Other than that, I'd have to say Edgar Allen Poe.

Edgar Allan Poe is the best but H. P. Lovecraft is a close second.
