The fifth Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. He built it for his beloved queen when she died to house her body (and she's still there). There's a lot of symbolism in the building and the decor used. He also built the grounds to symbolize what his religion viewed as heaven. He originally wanted to build a black taj mahal across the river - in exact duplicate of the one for his wife - for himself, but it never got built before he died. He's burried next to his wife in the center of the taj mahal. A wonderful testament to love.

I believe the queen's name was Moon Taj Mahal - so it was even named for her.

Shah Jahan, the Mughal Emperor ordered its consturction, but it was the workers that BUILT the Taj Mahal. BTW...he chopped of all their hands so they would never be able to build anything that magnifiecnt ever again.
