Check in an encyclopedia or a history book that might be around the house. Wikipedia's article on the Republican Party is not very good. The advice you get here will be so slanted that it will be very inaccurate. Good luck, you can do it better on your own, take my word!

Just remember that no one party is better than another, technically. It's the views of the people in the party who build it or burn it. A party's views shift every 100 years or so, so what might be Republican now will be Democrat in 2100.
Politics is in the eye of the beholder.
