Walk the line is another way of saying "toe the line".

One who "toes the line" is one who does not allow his foot to stray over the line. In other words, one who does not stray beyond a defined boundary.

the johnny cash movie was called that because it's the name of a johnny cash song (i walk the line)that he was inspired to write to let june carter know (after she used those words to him) he was willing to work on his substance abuse issues if that was what it took to earn her love.

in Shania Twain's song-it means to stay on your toes and not do anything wrong

in the movie-it means you're on a boarder line of someone leaving you(?)
