I was trying to park at my friend’s apartment and didn’t see a pole, so I hit the pole it damaged the side door of my brand new SUV.

My friend suggested to report it as “hit and run” like I had my car parked in a grocery store and someone hit so it wouldn’t be my fault… and she also suggested to file a “police report” on this….so my insurance wouldn’t cost that much … I guess my question would be…. Should I take her advice or just tell my insurance what really happened … I mean what is the difference… I really don’t want to pay so much money because I can’t afford it, especially x-mass is coming…

Please help….advice? Suggestion? Opinion…anything will he helpful and thank you in advance…..

Don't tell the insurance the truth. Just tell them it was a hit and run. and they will just make you pay the deductible, and depending on who it is with your rates probably wont go up.

Are there any cameras in the parking lot that this happened in? Because if there is then your insurance company when they are investigating this hit and run, will see that you hit a pole. Also does it look like it was a car or a truck that hit you? because if it doesn't then you'll also be screwed. Do you have collision coverage on your insurance policy? because if you do your best bet would be go through your insurance company and you'll have to lay out the deductible. Either way you'll have to lay out the deductible whether it was a pole or a unknown vehicle. But if you don't have collision coverage, then go with the hit and run story, but you'll still have to lay out the deductible. Just note, that insurance fraud can get you jail time, so just be smart about it.

Tell your insurance the truth. They will still fix the car, but you'll get a "point" on your insurance that will raise your rates a little next time. Honesty.....sometimes the best policy!

Filing a false police report is illegal. The police will know by the damage you are lying. Don't risk jail time to save a few bucks.
