The other suggestions are good but they are over in about 30 minutes - I think you should go to Covent Garden, there are loads of street acts going on all the time and the musicians busking around the restaurants are just amazing - I never get bored just walking around and taking it all in, you can spend a day there easily.
Lots of Cafes and Restaurant/Bars, a Market and some good shops too

If you really only have day, have a walk around Westminster/Victoria to see London's most famous sites. You can see Buckingham Palace (try to see Changing of the Guard at the right time of day), Westminster Abbey (entry costs money unless you go for a service), Parliament (join the queue on the right for the Lords, not the Commons, as you'll get in faster, see a more splendid chamber and not have to sit behind glass), Downing St and Trafalgar Square. A cheaper alternative to the Eye is the bell tower of Westminster Catholic catheral, on Victoria St between the Abbey and the Palace. It's only about £3 and you can see all over London.
Or if you want something really unusual, try Sir John Soane's Museum or the largest Hindu temple outside of India up in Neasden.

Gordon's wine bar. IT is at the embankment stop of the tube. Walk away from the river and just a wee bit up the hill, you will see a building on your right--a door in the corner of the building says Gordon's. It takes you down under the building to a very dark and interesting wine bar that very few tourists know about. It has a fabulous selection by the glass!!!

The Soanes Museum or the Walllace Collection.
They are two of the most interesting museums in London, but not all that well known

depend on your interest.
i can give you mine - but it is my interest, not yours!
and if you are about LONDON - there are also places around london!!!
i think you have to search the net and see.
i.e.
i like chocolate. i went to cudbury factory in birmingham.
it is not london. than what? why i should be just in LONDON?
and i saw london several times. and you?
if it is your first time....
if you like to take photo - of nature, see the kew gardens.
and so on....
