My family is interested in purchasing a cell phone family plan; does anyone have any suggestions for a plan that is cheap (maximum $60 a month) with average-term coverage (no more than a 2-year agreement)?

Or, would it be cheaper to purchase a pre-paid service? There are only 3 of us who currently need a cell phone, so does anyone have any strong recommendations?

I'm aware of the various services out there, but do not know whether there are hidden costs, etc.

Any help would be much appreciated. I thank you in advance.

While Verizon has a monopoly, along with Cingular, on Wireless advertising, there are overall 4 carriers worth looking at.
Pros/Cons of each:
Verizon: Good coverage, probably the best, fair cell phones, expensive plans, so-so Customer Service, and I have heard many horror storys about Verizon, I have also had bad experiances my self.
Verizon does not have a Family plan under $69.99 a month, so I would not advise them
Cingular: Fair coverage in a lot of places, but often get 1-2 bars and a lot of dropped calls. (While Cingular claims to have the least dropped calls, no study has been realeased, and their "leading research company" has never been identified, so there are many doubts weather this is true) They have some of the worst Customer care in the buisness, but they have a large coverage area, and somewhat competitive prices. Personaly, I would not advice them, but you can pick what you want.
They offer 550 Min a month for $59.99 a month
Sprint/Nextel: Their coverage is less then what should be expected from the 3rd largest nationwide carrier. They offer medium priced phone and somewhat fair plans, but I would not advise them.
Sprint/Nextel (one company) offers 550 Min for $59.99 a month
T-mobile: While their coverage isen't as good as Verizon, and isen't as wide spread as Cingular, T-mobile has some of the best coverage in the game. They have many roaming agreements with Cingular, meaning they can use Cingular's network when they don't have a tower near somehwere.

If you get good service at your house/work, I would go with T-mobile. They have the best Customer Care in the buisness that will work with you as much as they can to help you out. They are only the 4th biggest wireless company in the US, and have 1/2 the customer base that Cingular/At&T has, but they are owned by European Deutsche Telekom, meaning that their funding is coming from a large company. Overall, I have had the best experiance with T-mobile, and that is who I have been using for years. They offer cheap phones, and recantly came out with MyFaves
For $59.99 you get 700 Minutes a month (150 more then the other companys) plus you get unlimited night calling (starting at 9pm) and weekened calling (friday at 9 to monday at 6am)
The nights and weekends are also offered by Cingular, Sprint, and Verizon
If you spend $69.99 a month, T-mobile offers a plan called Myfaves. Every line can put in 5 numbers to a special program on their phone, and they can call those numbers, unlimited, for free. You can change it once per calander month (once in Jan, once in Feb, etc...) it is a very nice slick plan. I hope I helped. If you want to know more, you can e-mail me at nwahsnwahs018@yahoo.com
