I took a typing class in high school which was only a semester long, and I got pretty good. I can type about 70 wpm. That's words you can type per minute minus 1 for every error you make, I think. There's words per minute tests online, but the ones I've seen are only 1 sentence long. If you do them over and over you can kind of get an average of what your speed is. There are usually classes available somewhere where you can take a typing class. I'm sure there's somewhere in your area that can.

Once you know how to type you don't need to look at the keyboard except to get a sense where your hands are, but even then there's two little bumps on the F and J keys to know where to start your hands when you can't see (darkness). Typing teaches you which fingers to use when you type something. Your fingers stay over top of the ASDF and JKL; keys. I still have a hard time remembering where all the numbers are across the top. I have to look down for them every once in awhile.

Practice, and all depends on how much you practice and work at it. If you want to learn the basics, take a typing class that explains finger moment and finger key responsibility. And I think the standard may have been 72 words a minute but most likely higher now with word processors. A good typist will hit 120+.

Its called touch typing and you learn in a typing class where the keyboard of the typewriter is blank and you watch a blackboard or such where there is a blow up of a keyboard with all the regular keys. You do exercises using that to look at while typing. You get faster and faster with experience.

I was taught typing in class in Junior High school. A skill that has paid off many times. Along with years and years of practice. Get used to the keyboard. I type at an average speed of 90wpm and can copy morse code at about 70wpm (its a lost art).

practice practice practice...Just try to type without looking. When you get frustrated then look down occassionally. If you get too frustrated then try again later. The more times you attempt it the more times you may suceed. On big words I have to admit like responsibilities and independence things like that I still have to look down. But I just try to start off without looking. Gotta love the backspace key...The lettering is worn off!

With enough practice and learning the main key letters like asdf and jkl; (i think they're called home keys. I don't know I'm not sure?) The rest you just learn with practice or going to a keyboarding class =)

Lots of typing classes and remembering the home row. I used to do 60 words per minute. Not sure what it would be now.

I was one of those people who started out with two fingers. Steadily more fingers came into the mix. With more practice, eventually you will notice that you dont have to look at the keyboard when you type. :)
