At your mums age it could be hormones.
Another ( and the most likely reason IMO) is fibroids. Fibroid are NON canceroous growths that are very very common in middle ages women they can casue heavy prolonged bleeding and can be diagnosed via a scan. The best cure for fibroids are myomectomy- They remove the fibroids but if they are particularly large then a hysterectomy may be the best option. Some women with fibroids will have noticed tahtthey have put wieght on just in that area. Try not to worry too much!

Just saw your comment about Bloods Hormones change rapidlyin your mums age group so would be an ideal time to have them done again

she needs a biopsy of the lining of her uterus. this problem is exceedingly common for women in their 40's approaching menopause. the ultrasound is fine and good to look for fibroids and maybe polyps, but as a test for cancer- it just does not give enough information. an ultrasound can be used to rule out cancer in a POST menopausal woman but it is not useful in a woman who is still cycling. an endometrial biopsy is a simple, quick biopsy done in the doctors office. takes a minute or so and does involve cramping but is over very quickly. if she does not get one, she really should ask about it. most likely she does not have cancer, however, the only way to know for sure is to go looking for it. by the way, if i ever get cancer i sure hope it is uterine, if caught early can be cured with a simple hysterectomy and should not affect her life at all. good luck to you and your mom.

no, it doesnt automatically mean cancer,, I had heavy periods about 2 years ago and had a procedure done where they burn the inside of your uterus. That helped alot.

Sounds to me like she needs a D and C. Dilation and Curettage.
Her uterus needs to be scraped, then she'll stop bleeding.
It doesn't automatically mean cancer.
