Grass can only grow if the temperature is above 6 Celsius. As the days and nights start to get colder, the growth slows and eventually stops for the winter.

There are a few reasons but all have to do with the fact that it is fall.

In the fall, the earth tilts away from the sun. This effect causes two major changes, the length of time of exposure to the sun and the directional approach of the sun light. What this says is that we see less sunlight and that sunlight is coming at us from an angle instead of 'head on'. These two things cause the cooler temps and the shorter days.

Plants (including grass) are dependent upon the sun the manufacture the nutrients they need to grow. This process is what makes grass green. When plants feel the affect of the lessening sunlight they begin to shut down their photosensysis (spelling?) process. Larger plants (hardwood, non-evergreen trees) will even push the sap downward into the root system below ground. This process protects them from the freezing temperatures that are coming. This also allows them to store the nutrients they need for the coming months of little to no sunlight.

Think of the plant changes in fall as them preparing for winter.

Hope this helps the understanding.

It goes dormant like everything else. Not actively growing but protected (as by bud scales) from the environment.

As the temperatures drop and the hours of daylight decrease, it goes into a slower growth state.

Shorter days mean less sunlight! That's the sign to go dormant.
