I hate to seem so simple-minded, but....

the clouds just before the sun sets - sometimes they're mauve or pink or gray, and their shapes and style vary from moment to moment and foot by foot. The sunlight seems white and shows up in a variety of artistic ways from behind, through, and around the clouds - and the light shifts as clouds change. The whole picture changes from moment to moment until the process of the sun's setting is completed.

There are, I'm sure, all kinds of things in the heavens that should be more fascinating to me; but sometimes if a telescope is needed to see something the level of fascination it can have is different.

If the pink, mauve and gray clouds strung across as a sky in white, gray, and shades of pinks sky can do what it does for me (and some other people) - it may not seem all that necessary to look beyond them. :)

I saw the total eclipse a few years ago, when I was staying in Torquay, UK. I was looking out to sea in the late morning. Over a few seconds, the whole sea, right out to the horizon, turned from grey to dark green, and the lights of the ships became visible. The light level was the same as dusk.

The people on the beach spontaneously started cheering and clapping.

SHOOTING STARS. Last year I was driving through New Mexico along this lonely highway up on the ridge of this mountain at about 7,000 elevation. The sky was black and there were stars everywhere. And not only were there stars but stars were shooting everywhere. Lots of them. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.

The moon. Get a good pair of binoculars (or if possible a small astronomical telescope) and look at it when it's partial. The line between the light and dark shows the mountain ranges. Awesome!
(Some of them higher than Everest?)

Just the sky itself! Have you ever looked up on a clear day and seen all that blue and think "Man, just beyond that is all blackness"

For some reason that's cool to me.
