Is there research into the effects on classes that require real work, like math and physics, from classes that show movies every day, like history and criminal justice? It seems like the kids just want to be entertained.

I'd say - mix it up. Good movies can be great lead-ins to discussion and hands-on work.
I still vividly recall a wonderful (and relatively short) film called "Time Is . . ." that made the theory of relativity very real to me.

There is a great show called Nova (PBS?) that has really good shows on Physics. Also, a Canadian show called The Nature of Things with David Sazuki deals with physics too!

They are not just being lazy- History (when taught properly) uses movies to compliment their subject. WWI topic- All's Quitet on the Western Front, etc.

Modern Marvels from the Discovery Channel. Another good series is Engineering Disasters. Superbridge is an excellent video from Nova.

I think one of the best examples concerning physics is airplanes. Show them movies about military jets (and yes, since they're kids they'll probably like Top Gun, what kid doesn't like that movie) then have them apply the laws of physics to the maneuvers, pitch, yaw, wind resistance- all that. Trust me, they'll get into it.

Tell them if they do certain amount of work you will let them watch a movie. It will keep them concentrated and they will enjoy work even more.
