I think there are 8 conference champions and 8 automatic bids (if I remember correctly). The champs from the major conferences would advance, plus the highest ranked of the remaining schools.

Although I don't know the correct answer to your question, I can take a good guess... It's probably the winner or the top two teams of each conference. The "football guru" must of misread your question, he is talking about Division 1-A and you are talking about Division 1-AA.

There are no "Playoffs" in the NCAA it is all bowl games. It is strictly determined by the AP Poll. No one really understands how or why teams are ranked. I think they should change to a Playoff format though.
