Both sometimes. Nosocomial infection, faulty isolation, practitioner errors, complications and plain old stress are all risks that you take on at the hospital. I think that you and your family have just been the unfortunate victims of terrible coincidences. I hope that they're wrong about your mother. If it's an infection or other issue of fault, get representation now, for everyone's sake, because they need to take responsibility for it.

It isn't the doctors’ fault; they wouldn't have entered medicine unless they really wanted to help people. Surgery is a science and they plan for every care that they can, but even doctors aren’t perfect.

I don't know how old your parents are (were in one case), but the older you are the more stress affects you. Those operations may sound simple, but they are invasive, they involve general anesthesia, and laying part of the person's body open. The anesthesia prevents the brain from feeling the pain during the operation, but the body still feels it, they feel it afterwards in the recovery process, and the subconscious will remember the pain. This kind of stress can put a huge load on the body, and that makes it harder to recover.

Strokes come from many reasons. One possibility is that a minor air bubble was unknowably introduced into the blood stream and reached a small blood vessel in the brain. Once there it blocked a key part of the brain and gave your father the stroke. This is a known complication of any surgery. The risk is minor, but no operation is totally safe. If this happened (and I can't say if it did) then frankly it was just very bad luck. The simply stress of the operation may have been enough.

I don't know what happened in the hernia operation or if the operation had anything to do with her diagnoses, but I know that when faced with a terrible blow like the loss of a husband, some people just quit living. Her immense loss had to affect her and that lead to her poor health.

The repairs that you are talking about are routine operations, but they still leave the body with a wound. The single worst place to be when you are injured, as far as infection goes, is in the hospital. Despite whatever sanitation efforts are made the germs grow and can infect people. Again this is a case of very bad luck. The hospital is taking every health measure that it can, but they can't possibly clean every deep recess or air duct. Like terrorism the germs only have to get lucky once and they look for every crack. This is why we now see resistant forms of the germs, ones that no mater what is done some of them survive.

You are feeling bitter right now, and no one will blame you for that. It is one of the known processes of grief. Your loss has been huge (I lost my Dad 3 years ago and still grieve for him), I can’t imagine the depth of your sorrow; time doesn’t heal all wounds, it only reduces the pain. All I can do is say that I feel sorry and I wish you didn’t have to go through this. Your pain is your own I can say I know how you feel, but I really don’t, that’s why police officers always say, “I am sorry for your loss.” It sounds empty, but there is no way to lessen your pain. If I tell you about mine then I am only making it worse for you.

You are going to have to be strong, for your mother, but take the time to grieve.

I really don't want to sound insensitive because this has happened in my family as well, but the risk is there with any surgery, even with something like a breast augmentation or a nosejob (I'm definitely not saying that your parent's surgeries were that trivial). That is why there is a whole section on this in the release form that the patient signs before the procedure. Any time you open up a human body and perform any kind of surgery, there is a risk of complications or even death. It's really not either doctors or disease that kill. Doctors are by no means perfect, and even in surgically correcting something that is causing a person to be ill, they can become more ill than they were initially. I am very sorry that this has happened to you twice now. It is very unfortunate and I hope that your mother comes through.

I don't know, but I feel you. My Daughters Grandmother(on her
dads side) went to the hospital for knee surgery and died on the
operating table. My Father had been sick had a few strokes
and was in and out of the hospital. He was only 72 years old
and just died in March 06, His body organs just start shutting down slowly. But the weird part about this ,was our Father knew
the date he was going to pass away. He had told my sister that
the 22 and 29 was coming, well the 22 is when he passed
and the 29 was my moms Birthday. I hope everything turns
out alright, but if what the Dr. says is true ,then I wish your
mom and you and the family my sympathy, love and support.

Simplicity is compleatly relative. Its not nessicarly simple, but rutine. It may be malpractice in some cases, but most of the time its because someone had an unexpected reaction to some medicine, something else was already wrong that became worse when operated on, the body couldnt handle the shock load...theres just so many variables that sometimes things happen. Its like you driving where ever every day. You get in the car, routine, you start it, you drive, still routine, relativly simple, but then the car blows up because something shorted. Was it your fault? Was it the mechanics fault? Sometimes things just happen beyond our control.

As hard as it may be to accept it,(being a loved one) I believe it is simply their time to go. Doctors do what they know to do . Even if the Doctor has a lot of knowledge and after performing the surgery the patient seems to be doing good, anything can happen and take a turn for the worst, thus dieing.

I believe if its your time to go on a perticular day, then you will die wheather it be in surgery, car accident, drowning, etc.

Because doctors and nurses and pharmacists are not God. People expect more than they can give because they have puffed up ideas about the medical profession and fail to remember they are only human like us and full of imperfections like us.
