Cut down a tree, trim to height of column desired plus an extra foot or two of trim, trim off any branches left on the tree, put in a lathe, chip off the bark, begin shaping column to desired shape in the lathe, sand smooth and paint or varnish. Install finished column, repeat if you want more than one.
Or you could buy one that is already completed, made out of a choice of materials.
Or did you mean a metal column like used in comercial buildings, this is a completely different process for that.

Structurally speaking, beware of making your own columns. They are an important structural member and you better know how big to make them and what type of connections to make..

Are you talking Word Processing or physical columns for your house?
