To answer your question Leyland really doesnt have much of a choice. With Casey out he has to play Guillen at 1st.
He could put Santiago or Infante at short to replace Guillen, but they are not all that great defensively (not as good as perez is supposed to be). I agree Infante would be the better choice (at least offensively).
Also, Pudge has played 1st base, but Leyland wants I-Rod behind the plate, calling the game.
And he cant use Shelton because he is NOT on the roster for this round, but I expect he will be for the next round.
So, it looks like Tiger fans are stuck with perez's ugly criminal face. It's okay though, The Tigers still win The ALCS.

Man, I have been bitching about this all day! I absolutely cannot stand Nefe Perez! The only thing I've seen the guy do is hit a ball right to the first baseman for a quick out! - He's horrible, plain and simple... Worst part is, he and Polanco are good friends and were childhood buddies! Talent-wise, they're like night and day. Now that I've finished complaining along with you, my answer to your question would be.. uh..I ...uh... Leyland hasn't steered us wrong so far in these play-offs, maybe he's seen something spark with Perez... but.. I doubt it.. he probably just doesn't have anyone else to choose..
