George Herman Ruth... The Babe, The Sultan of Swing, The Bambino. (Fifty plus years since his death and they are still making movies about him ie. "Everybody's Hero") Says alot for his staying power in the game.

One important point I might make concerning the Chicago Black Sox incident, the 1919 World Series, where players from the Chicago team were accused for throwing the game ... after this debacle the American public was completely disillusioned by America's pastime and many vowed to never set foot into a ballpark. Not until Babe Ruth came along.... many historians will argue that he alone, and his skills in the ballpark brought people out again. He truly could be the single reason that baseball still exists. Yes, he was THAT good. His power swing is imitated even today. So, forget numbers, forget records, for Ruth is the one who set all the standards for which major league players strive to reach today.

With what criteria do you determine such a thing? There's no doubt the Babe is possibly the one, but there are others who shaped the game and went down in the record books, while facing obsticles Ruth didn't. Hank Aaron played more games, but endured nasty racism and threats to his bodily person, as did others like Willie Mays and Jackie Robinson. Not to mention "Buck," who just passed away, and all those guys in the ***** Leagues who suffered through $7 per week pay and lived on peanut butter and bread.

Babe Ruth probably did more for the game of baseball than anyone before or since. He pretty much saved the game after the 1919 Black Sox scandal.

But, if we are talking about which player had the most overall pure baseball talent - hitting, fielding, base running - I think Willy Mays tops the list.

Although I would give quick consideration to Aaron, Mays and Walter Johnson for different reasons, there is still only one definitive answer to your question:

Babe Ruth.
