It's never too late. I would suggest piano. You don't have to figure out strings, frets, valves, or finger stops. Just bang away. You may want to take some basic lessons just to get you started on scales and elementary music theory, but piano is a good instrument to learn to play by ear because the mechanics are simple (hit keys with fingers). Also, if you don't want to pay for a great big piano, you can always buy an electronic keyboard of some sort.

Guitar. It's hard to learn to play the guitar well, but very easy to learn how to play it badly!!

The 5 string banjo is even easier than the guitar, but is considered by many to be antisocial and just a little too "american".

Or why not try one of those recorders? the big ones? Try Hobgoblin music ...

Well as i have played two instruments over the past seven years i would probably have to say out of the two which were flute and clarinet, maybe the clarinet would be a good accompiniment to the other instruments and is pretty easy to learn.

The Triangle must be the easiest, but why not try bongo drums, they will provide a much needed bass line for the ensemble.

My kid says bass guitar! YEAH! Every hymn needs a good bass line...and get the church to buy some huge speakers!
