This is the first time I have read this suggestion. If it is an A level history question it is seriously flawed. SOME women went to India as part of their trawl for husbands. The upper class would not seek to marry daughters off to British Indian Army Officers as Victorian England rather looked down on its sons employed on Imperial duties.

As in a lot of socities then & now single women were a burden to be got rid of.
There were many men to be found in the army in India. The civil service was also sought after but not as posh. Thats where the word comes from Port Out Starboard Home.
The wealthy would ensure the cooler cabins out & home.
Those women who did not find a husband were known as ''The returned empties''
Women did'nt have much choice in the matter
Those that chose India had to face the fact that they would lose most of thier chilren or die in childbirth.
Many women survived read Daughters of the Empire cant recall the author, sorry

They did NOT visit India as single women looking for husbands. Many couples did, after marriage take up a position within the civil service/ administrative bureaucracy others of course(daughters of the Raj ) found husbands while living in India with their parents.

Some people may have done this, because when India was part of the British Empire so many wealthy families lived there.....also it was seen as a good experience to go to India, travel and see part of the world.

It could quite possibly be that a lot of eligible british men were officers and at one point a lot of Officers were sent out to India.

I'm not sure that they ever did. The only time that I could think that they did would have been in the "hayday" of the British Emprise.
